I personally know all the instructors at Birtley. They not only follow the expected criteria within the GKR curriculum but develop themselves by studying different styles of Martial Arts and sharing their knowledge when they can with their students. This involves them going to different Seminars which includes traditional Karate.
Like any large organisation there will always be difficulties which results in some negative reviews. ....just like you get on Trip Advisor.
If there appears a negative review in relation to the Birtley Dojo then I would seriously Question if that individual had actually trained there.
The Traditional Karate practitioner could find deficiencies and one just needs to understand the limitations which does not necessarily mean it is not as good. ..
One has to understand the differences between Modern and old style Karate and decide the path they prefer which does not necessarily mean you have to choose one or the other.
I was an instructor with GKR during the 12 years I was with them and still go back to train with some of the instructors when I can. ..( hopefully more in the future)
The instructors are not only good at the physical aspects of Karate but also positively promote the importance of how one should behave outside the Dojo as well. .. not having an ego, having empathy, being caring, and generally being good role models. ... are promoted just as much as the physical aspects.
My review is just relating to the Birtley Dojo as I have already intimated that there will always be issues within a large organisation.
I would recommend Birtley Dojo and urge anyone interested in learning Karate to go along and have a go.
