I started learning here when I was at the school as a pupil and carried on until the day I left the school, if you want good and fun teaching then please go here !!! :)
There are three things I would like in a martial art for myself or my child; practicality, morality and enjoyability. But before I tried Shorinjikempo, I'd pretty much given up finding all three in one, but 'Kempo' provided. It's an astonishingly effective form of self-defence. It's beautiful, in its own way, but if you're searching for a practical martial art, preferring effective techniques and morality over show-boating, then seriously give Kempo a try.
But what really makes these classes stand out is the fact that both morality and fun are woven into every lesson, in equal measure. The main teacher, who is a police officer with real-life daily experience of self-defence, is a deeply moral man. ..but one who knows the value of a good anecdote over a heady lesson.
It's a great class. One where you'll have a good laugh, before really setting down to some serious work. The workout is intense, but with a brilliantly built-in scale of intensity. You're expected to push your own limits; not anyone else's. There's a powerful ethic towards 'improving yourself' which is, somehow, never preachy. This is a class which doesn't labour under machismo – no one practising it seems to have anything 'to prove'. And it's amazing to see that calm, non-aggressive self-confidence imparted in the kids classes too.
So, yes, I recommend all of the Kempo classes at the Gregg school. I've had the pleasure of helping out with some of the kids classes, and they are brilliantly tailored to the audience. The young women's self-defence classes contain everything I'd want my own daughter to know. And the adults classes are well worth trying out yourself.
