Since joining the London Wing Chun academy 8 months ago I have received some excellent training from Sifu Mark Phillips and his instructors. Classes are structured to diversify training as much as possible and there is empahisis on warmup, fitness, discipline, relaxation, theory, self-defense and technique.
One of the things which persuaded me to join initially was the open day session. The Wing Chun style was explained in great detail and a demonstration was given by some advanced students and instructors to show application of the first form. This was a huge plus because most other martial arts schools I've personally known of do not have such an open day system. You simply just join in a beginners class and see how it goes. There are also several assistant instructors in most beginners classes at London Wing Chun to assist students with their techniques and routines. Again, this is something often lacking in other martial arts schools.
The system of having a class for each of the three levels (beginners, intermediate and advanced)as an alternative to having belts is very effective and allows students to progress at a good steady pace whilst working with other peers of a similar but varied ability. I am now at intermediate level myself. From what I have observed there are also a significant number of students at each level, a good proportion of which are at an advanced stage in their training and have been studying with the school for a very long period of time. This is allways a good sign.
I have been training at the London wing chun academy for the past two years and have nothing but praise for the place. 7 days a week the academy is open and available for you to either take classes or drop in and train. There is a good mix of all level students plus many who have trained under sifu mark phillips for over a decade which in its self is a sign of the quality of sifu phillips teachings and the academy's facilities. So if you are interested in wing chun, Bjj or sanda or just want to get fit and in shape the London wing chun academy is definitely worth a look!
