Bicester Battodo - NintaiKai Martial Arts & Wellness

Battodo (translates literally as “way of drawing the sword”) is a close cousin of iaido, both of which are descended from battojutsu and iaijutsu, respectively. These arts all involve learning to draw a katana from its scabbard, strike the target, and return the weapon to its original place in the fastest and smoothest way possible. But the element ‘DO’ (way) refers more to the understanding that the benefits of battodo training should go far beyond the physical. Working with a blade should sharpen the practitioner’s mental focus and strengthen their spirit. In our practice of battodo we explore and build on this connectedness between body, mind and sword.

Programs & Class Schedule

Adult only Japanese sword classes.

We train in Nakamura Ryu Battodo a modern Japanese sword art derived from the koryu sword schools of Japan and refined and developed through the experience of Sensei Nakamura Taisaburo. The style reflects Sensei Nakamura's belief that the true purpose and meaning of sword lies in its being a kutsujinken, a life-giving blade that enriches people. The style includes test cutting/tameshigiri, single and pair forms (kumitachi) as well as non-sword body conditioning through tanren practice.

Mondays 7-9.30pm Kingsmere Community Centre, Bicester
