Rhyl Judo Club was founded over 60 years ago and is the longest running martial arts club in Rhyl, North Wales.
Judo is a full contact martial art and sport with throws, pins, joint locks, chokes, grappling and groundwork all involved. Judo was started in Japan in 1882 by Professor Jigorō Kanō where it was called Kanō Jujutsu. Over the years it was developed and refined and renamed Judo, becoming one of the most popular martial arts in the world and an Olympic sport in 1964.
You can find aspects of Judo in many modern self-defence practices. To learn this beautiful art, you will need to have a high level of flexibility and agility. It is not for the faint hearted and is a sport that will take years to learn. However, it will give you confidence and great exercise for building both mental and physical abilities. Everybody is welcome to come and try the sport, you will know yourself if you enjoy it. From there on, gradings are for each individual as to their own ability.
The club is currently run by Sensei Steve Holmes (5th Dan) and Sensei Bernie Smith (1st Dan).
*** Please note that from 1/1/2018 the Judo club has moved to the ABC boxing gym in Prestatyn. ***
