Good instruction - but beware

Generally good, but beware of senior instructor who is a bully! Everybody sucks up to her because that is the only way to make progress here. The dojo is a shrine to Josh Johnson's ego but apart from that the instruction is good.

Great place to train

Found this club through an internet search and was impressed with their website (though it is old and out of date!!!)

Joined as a complete beginner at a more mature age than most so was slightly concerned that I would not be able to keep up with the younger students.

Was quickly put at ease as they matched the training and exercises to each student's ability but they push us all to stretch our ability - just what I needed!

I'm slowly moving up through the grades but it's not a race and there is no pressure to grade if we do not feel ready - in fact the instructors are very honest about whether we are ready and don't put students forward unless they believe they can pass with a first class grade.

Would highly recommend this club to any age student.

Superb for Children

I searched for several months for a karate school who specifically have children only classes for my two children to train at. I eventually found Wakefield Karate & Martial Arts College and found the quality, integrity and professionalism to be head and shoulders above any other dojo I had visited.

As an ex-karateka myself, I knew what to look for and could easily hunt out the charlatans and "fake" graded black belts. I checked the credentials and grading history of the Chief and Senior Instructors and everything was above board.

The training my children have both received has been exemplary - the grades they have attained have to be earned, they are not given away like in so many clubs who are around purely to generate income. I know that when they eventually progress to higher standards, they will be able to practically use what they learn.

We are under no illusion that it is a lifelong learning process; so called "Junior Black Belts" are a false representation of ability to defend against an adult - this dojo does not award any black belt to under 16 year olds which is the hallmark of a traditional martial arts club.

A great club with a range of classes and instructors. Highly traditional values and very high standards of instruction in Wado Ryu Karate. The club focuses on the three K's of karate - Kihon, Kata and Kumite to a very high degree. Great club, great instructors and great fellow students!
