The teachers are amazing, the atmosphere is friendly, and there’s now a swear jar; the cursing may trend towards Disney pirate.

I have been training at the York school of defense (YSD) for the past couple of years. Chris the instructor manages to strike a great balance between having a fun environment to train in with having a serious attitude to the training itself. For beginners it is a great, safe way to get into a martial art, and for those with experience elsewhere it is satisfyingly out of the norm. Come along and join us sometime, we are always happy to see new faces.
The school has just celebrated its 5th anniversary, and I've been attending for a bit over three years, occasionally at first but I was quickly hooked. Came for the Tuesday mainly-swords sessions initially, and now take part in the works.
The atmosphere is friendly & welcoming but studious, with a good mix of taking it seriously and having fun. We have a strong safety record, in part due to a definite "no macho rubbish" ethos (always adhered to, except when training how to put down an opponent who comes in that way). I don't think I'd have been comfortable with the more serious unarmed work otherwise. I started with almost no previous martial arts experience, and we have quite a mix of people at different levels of experience and fitness, so all are catered for, and no kit beyond clothes that are comfortable to train in is required.
Of course like with any martial training it may ruin some TV/films for you, as you learn how badly wrong they sometimes depict combat, but why are you watching swords and such on TV when you can instead be having fun doing it yourself?!
