What is Taught at the Hakudakan?
Ju Jitsu
Ju Jitsu is a highly practical combat system that teaches you how to defend your self at all ranges from grabs , holds, punches kicks and strangles.
The style that is taught incorporates rapid multiple strikes, throwing, joint locking/joint destruction, ground fighting, chokes and strangulation, control & restraint (C&R), edged weapon defence.
A very powerful street effective system that is based on technique rather than strength.
Filipino Martial Arts-Kali
An ancient martial art of the Philippines. Kali is a comprehensive weapons and empty-hand based system.
Weapons training consists of single stick, double stick, knife, stick & knife. The purpose of teaching the weapons in today’s modern environment is purely to enhance a student’s attributes. Kali weaponry is a superb way of developing your co-ordination, timing, reflexes, footwork, speed and movement.
The translation of weapons based movements to empty hand allows for a unique approach to destroying limbs prior to attacking the major targets. The empty hand art of Panantukan (Filipino Boxing) & Pananjakman (kicking) consists of nerve and limb destruction, zoning, punching, kneeing, kicking and Dumog (grappling/wrestling).
Jeet Kune Do
literally “Way of the Intercepting Fist” a martial art combat system developed by Bruce Lee.
Recently, the name used has been changed by some of its adherents to Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do — “Jun Fan” being Lee’s Chinese given name, therefore the literal translation is “Bruce Lee’s Way of the Intercepting Fist.”
Jeet Kune Do is Bruce Lee’s combat philosophy which he created after his research into fighting styles which had originally lead to the creation of Jun Fan Gung Fu. Lee emphasised that Jeet Kune Do was to be understood as a process, not a product (another way of stating the claim that Lee’s interpretation was different from others’ interpretation of the term “martial art”).
Hakudakan
Its not a style, its just the name I have chosen to use for the clubs. The style of Ju Jitsu is based on Goshin Ryu Ju Jitsu, but because of my training, there are many other influences within the system I teach. I teach Kali (Filipino Martial Arts) & JKD (Jeet Kune Do) separately to preserve the arts and in respect for my teachers but these arts have heavily influenced my approach to training and teaching and therefore there is a blend of systems in all classes. I try to make it clear to students which arts the techniques that I teach have come from.
What does it mean?
Hakudakan: The home of close quarter combat. Hakuda, the term was one of the many Japanese expressions to describe close combat systems prior to the widespread use of Jujitsu (which can be spelt a number of ways Jujutsu, Jiujitsu etc). Kan translates to home or building.
What does Ju Jitsu translate to?
Ju translates to compliant or gentle referring to the soft redirection of force, Jitsu translates to art as in a battlefield art rather than a sport, therefore Ju Jitsu is the compliant or gentle art.
