Walthamstow Battodo - Way of the Japanese Sword.

Walthamstow Battodo with Sensei Bogdan Drinkov 2nd dan, teaches Nakamura Ryu Battodo.

Batto’ means to draw and strike with the Japanese sword. ‘Do’ refers to a path of training aimed at the complete development of the practitioner.

The Nakamura Ryu school of swordsmanship was founded in 1952 by Taizaburo Nakamura, one of the greatest swordsmen of the modern era, a combat veteran, instructor of close combat and lifelong researcher of traditional swordsmanship. Like Miyamoto Musashi, he abhorred the artificial and impractical developments in many sword schools and sought to recreate a school of genuine combat swordsmanship.

  • Nakamura Ryu Battodo

Programs & Class Schedule

We train Tuesday evenings from 7 pm a short walk from Walthamstow Central station.

All beginners must complete a four week (Tues 7-8 pm) course.
This course will include the basic stances and stepping, how to hold the sword, how to draw and put away the sword safely. Kirioroshi and Tsuki - the basic cut and thrust.
You will also learn shunpu - the first sword kata.

Introduction to Tanren – a system of body conditioning or ‘forging’ that develops the qualities of strength and flexibility required for Japanese sword arts.

Course fee: £40
Must be over 18.
